Migraine Treatments
Our dentist can help treat migraines by identifying and addressing oral health, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and other critical pain-related issues.
NTI Treatment
Migraine and tension-type headaches can completely disrupt a patient's life. If you're experiencing frequent headaches or if you take medication for your headaches more than twice a week, please reach out to us. We understand these headaches impact your life and are here to help. Thankfully, we have a solution! We are trained to prescribe a preventive treatment for the pervasive symptoms of tension-type headaches and migraines that are related to jaw clenching. The NTI-tss and NTI-tss Plus® is a simple anterior mouthguard that reduces the maximum clenching power of the jaw muscles by approximately 70%. The nociceptive input produced by the over-activity of these muscles, specifically the temporalis, is a significant contributor to tension headaches and migraines. It is indicated for patients who experience possible symptoms of tension-type headaches, migraines, TMD, tooth wear from clenching, or muscle pain associated with these symptoms.
Bruxism is another movement disorder that involves grinding and clenching teeth. It can occur while you're asleep or awake. Sleep bruxism usually causes the worst pain when you wake up. In contrast, awake bruxism causes pain that worsens throughout the day. Once fitted correctly, an NTI appliance will prevent you from clenching your jaw and help relax the jaw muscles.
Our doctors may also prescribe and administer Botox, which can be added to relax the jaw muscles responsible for teeth grinding and reduce the intensity and frequency of clenching.
How Do I Get A NTI-TSS Guard?
First, you must schedule an appointment with our dentist to examine your mouth and evaluate whether or not an NTI-TSS guard would be a successful treatment option. Assuming it would be the best option, we will take an impression of your mouth, ensure your unique dental structure is captured, and send the cast model to a lab. There, they will create a custom-fitted guard tailored to your teeth. In a couple of weeks, you will return to our office to have the guard fitted, and we will answer any questions you may have.
